China has called on other countries to avoid intervention in Syria's internal affairs, urging Syrian authorities to exercise restraint and to maintain stability.
"Syria is an important country in the Middle East. We hope it can remain stable, and that all sides can resolve their differences through political dialog,” Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu as saying at a regular news briefing in the capital Beijing on Thursday.
"We also think that the outside world should not interfere in Syria's internal affairs so as to avoid complicating the situation," she added.
The Chinese official also called on the international community to play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.
Since the beginning of demonstrations in Syria in March, hundreds, including members of state security forces, have been killed and many others wounded.
The opposition blames the government for the violence, but Syrian authorities insist that armed gangs and foreign elements are responsible for the killings.
Syrian officials say they have busted a number of terrorist groups whose members have confessed to receiving money and weapons from foreign sources to kill demonstrators and security forces in order to cause chaos in the country.
