One person has been killed and at least 11 others, including two Americans, injured as a roadside bomb targeting US consulate vehicles went off in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar.

US Embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez announced Friday morning that the bomb exploded near two US consulate cars that were travelling on University Road in Peshawar, the Associated Press reported.

A Pakistani TV station showed that one of the vehicles had been damaged by the explosion.

Senior police official Shafi Ullah identified the individual killed in the attack as a Pakistani passer-by.

Police have cordoned off the area and the injured have been transported to a nearby hospital. Shafi Ullah said the injuries were not serious.

The Pakistani Taliban on Friday claimed responsibility for the blast and threatened further attacks.

Pakistan's Taliban militants have vowed to avenge the alleged killing of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden that took place in an unauthorized attack by US forces on a compound near a Pakistani military base on May 2.

At least 22 people were killed and several others were wounded as militatnts attacked a police checkpoint in Peshawar on Wednesday.
