Lebanese army fires on Israeli jets

The Lebanese army says it has opened fire on two Israeli warplanes that were violating the country's airspace at medium altitude.

"The army's anti-aircraft guns fired at two Israeli warplanes overflying Hasbaya in southeastern Lebanon," the Lebanese army said in statement late Sunday.

Israel's regular overflights across southern Lebanon are in violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the statement added. The resolution calls on Tel Aviv to stop invading Lebanon's sovereignty by land, sea and air.

Resolution 1701 was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council in August 2006 that brought to end Israel's 33-day war on Lebanon, during which Israeli forces failed to achieve any of their objectives.

The Sunday violation occurred amid Israel's escalating war threats in the region. The army says Israeli warplanes have entered Lebanese airspace on an almost-daily basis during the past months.

Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza Strip in the early hours of Friday, injuring at least two Palestinians.

Palestinian security officials and eyewitnesses said that Israeli aircraft fired at several targets across the Gaza Strip injuring two people.

Israeli warplanes struck a workshop in Gaza City, three tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border and two open fields, witnesses and security officials said.

The Israeli military refused to comment on the incident.

The attack came after a retaliatory rocket attack from Gaza Strip killed a 30-year-old Thai foreign worker, who was working in a greenhouse in Netiv Ha'asara in the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council, north of the Gaza Strip.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade — the armed wing of the Fatah movement — claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.

The airstrikes took place shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the phone.

Venezuela tests its new Chinese jets

Venezuela has tested six training and light attack jets bought from China for defense and the campaign against drug trafficking.

President Hugo Chavez ordered a total of eighteen Chinese-built K-8 jets after a plan to buy similar jets from Brazil failed because they included US electrical systems.

Venezuelan officials say the jets will be used to train pilots and intercept drug traffickers who use Venezuela as a route to take Colombian cocaine to the United States, Europe, and Africa.

Venezuela has also bought a network of ten radars from China and has spent about four billion dollars on Russian weapons, including fighter jets.
