'US nuke threat is state terrorism'

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaee describes the US threat of using nuclear weapons against other countries as state terrorism.

"Threats of using nuclear weapons against a nation are a clear sample of the state terrorism," Khazaee said at the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC).

He called for a frank fight against terrorism, saying, "Certain countries should not use the case as a political instrument to promote their expansionist goals and dispatch troops to remote parts of the world and to the Middle East in particular."

The Iranian envoy slammed such practices as adopting double standards and taking political advantage of the issue as well as making moves, which will actually serve to expand terrorism. He said, "Iran is a victim of terrorism and has always condemned acts of terror and the instrumental use of this phenomenon."

He urged all UN member countries to remain committed to legal and international regulations.

Khazaee said that state terrorism and the use of military force against poor nations under the pretext of a war on terror is a "serious danger" to global security and a clear breach of international rights and the Geneva Convention.

He noted that recent threats made by US officials about resorting to the use of nuclear arms against the Islamic Republic were a clear example of state terrorism and a violation of international rights.

The Iranian diplomat called on the international community to denounce the posing of threats against a country which is a member of the United Nations and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Threats of any kind are against article two of the U-N charter. Tehran says it plans to submit a formal complaint to the United Nations.

Iran says the US cannot preach about nuclear disarmament while it threatens to use its nuclear weapons against other nations.

The US on Monday opened a two-day nuclear summit which is being attended by leaders of 46 other countries.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast cast doubt on the Washington's intention behind its nuclear summit.

"Countries that possess nuclear weapons, have used them against hundreds of thousands of innocent people and now insist on keeping their nuclear arsenals and even threaten nations with such weapons cannot hold such conferences," Mehmanparast said, adding that there was serious doubt about the US "real intention" behind the summit.

He said the summit was a "show" aimed to "invoke an unreal threat" while seeking to draw the global community's attention away from the main source of concern, which he said were nuclear weapons stockpiled in Western countries.

US Nuclear Policy Review

On the Obama Administration's newly released "Nuclear Posture Review" (NPR), Mehmanparast said that threatening nations with nuclear weapons pose the "grossest human rights violation" and a "breach of the UN Charter".

He said that Iran has already begun legal action against the US and has sought to document its complaint at the UN.

The new NPR by the Obama Administration restricts the use of US nuclear arms against some non-nuclear countries but excludes Iran under the allegation that it does not comply with non-proliferation treaties.

Iraqi Election

Mehmanparast said that the Iraqi election was a "major step toward the establishment of security and peace" in the country and warned against any foreign interference in Iraq's domestic affairs.

Israel's Threats of Attack

He called Israel's repeated threat of military action against Iran "psychological warfare" and said that Iran's response to any possible attack would be "severe".

Tehran's Research Reactor Fuel

On the required fuel for Tehran's research reactor, Mehmanparast said that the IAEA was "obliged" to meet Iran's "legal" demand.

He added that Iran still welcomes a fuel swap with the West but has started enriching uranium up to 20 percent to meet its demands after potential suppliers failed to help with the issue.

Iran's Arrested Journalist in Italy

Mehmanparast called Hamid Masouminejad's arrest a "political game" by Western countries and rejected allegations against him as "sheer lies".

He went on to say that Iran would take the necessary steps to secure the release of Masouminejad, a senior correspondent for Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) arrested in March for alleged arms trafficking to Iran contrary to the sanctions imposed by the West and the UN against the country.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry says Tehran will lodge a formal complaint with the United Nations against US President Barack Obama for threatening the country with a nuclear strike.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Sunday that the move was backed by 255 of Iran's 290 members of Parliament.

Last week, Obama made clear that his administration reserved the right to launch a nuclear attack on Iran under the pretext that the country is developing an atomic bomb.

Iran, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), says its program is only for the civilian applications of the technology. The UN nuclear watchdog has, in many reports, declared that there is no evidence of military objectives in the country's nuclear work.

Along with the US, Israel, which is the possessor of the Middle East's sole nuclear arsenal, has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran.

Iranian lawmakers, who have instructed the Foreign Ministry to lodge the letter of protest, warned the Obama administration against destabilizing the already "tense Persian Gulf and Middle East."

Turkey says Israel threatening global peace

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lashed out at Israel over the violation of Lebanese airspace through which it threatens peace in the region.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Saad Hariri, Erdogan said Israel has to stop violating Lebanon's airspace and its territorial waters, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

"We can never remain silent in the face of Israel's attitude. ... It has disproportionate power and it is using that at will while refusing to abide by UN resolutions. We can never accept this picture,” Erdogan said.

“These steps threaten global peace," he warned.

Hariri also described Israel as an enemy that threatens his country's security through "its violation of our airspace and waters.”

Lebanese army said earlier in the day that its anti-aircraft artillery fired at Israeli fighter jets flying over the country's southern airspace.

The Lebanese army reports almost every day violations of its airspace by Israeli warplanes.
