Those that call for the suspects death, or lynching, seems to stem from the need to feel some sort of superiority over their fears and in my opinion are the type to lead us to the next major war. Whatever happened to investigative journalism, the right to a lawyer, or being innocent until proven guilty? Where is the empathy for life?

A major blast is reported to have ripped through Aleppo, Syria’s largest city. The bomb allegedly targeted the headquarters of Syria’s ruling Ba'ath Party.

According to local media, unidentified gunmen hurled a grenade at the headquarters of Syria’s ruling party, killing a security agent and damaging the building. Guards then opened fire at the assailants, though it was not clear whether anyone was killed in the exchange.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), told AFP that “initial details indicate that the Aleppo blast was targeting the local branch of the ruling Ba'ath party and there is no information until now on the number of victims that fell in the explosion.”

However, one guard at the headquarters died, apparently in a round of gunfire following the explosion, reports Reuters citing SOHR. Activists in the city said they heard a very loud noise that appeared to come from an area in center of Aleppo.

"The sound was so loud and after that there were a lot of echoes of gun fire. Now all the roads leading to Saadallah al-Jabiry square are closed down," Reuters cites an activist who asked not to be named.

The blasts come hours after Syrian authorities killed a would-be suicide bomber, foiling a potentially major terror plot. The terrorist was shot before he had a chance to detonate 1,200 kilograms of explosives stashed in his minibus.

Also on Friday night, RT’s Sara Firth, on location in Damascus, has reported another possible explosion. The strength of the blast is not yet clear, and there has been no official confirmation. However, Firth said the RT crew could hear and feel something like a bomb going off from their hotel room. According to Firth, the feeling was akin to one they’d experienced “when the May 10 bombs exploded” near intelligence headquarters in the Syrian capital.

Only two days ago, 55 people were killed and 372 more injured by two powerful blasts in Damascus, the worst attack since the uprising began more than a year ago.

Two car bombs went off in quick succession during the morning rush hour, just as employees were arriving to work. A small initial explosion was followed by a much larger blast, allegedly targeted at paramedics and security forces arriving at the scene.

The explosion left two craters – three and six meters wide – in front of a military compound. The two cars were stuffed with more than 1,000 kilograms of explosives, said Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi.

The blasts were branded a terrorist attack by state television and the authorities, but there has been no claim of responsibility yet.

SOHR – Who can you trust?

Earlier, Russia questioned the reliability of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The activities of the controversial London-based group were denounced by Russia’s Foreign Ministry back on February 2012, with spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich casting doubts on SOHR’s reliability.

"As far as we know, this organization employs only two people (its head and secretary-translator). It is headed by Rami Abdulrahman, who has no training either in journalism or law or even a complete secondary education," Lukashevich said.

The SOHR is one of the most widely-quoted sources of Syrian casualty figures and Lukashevich pointed out that many information agencies, primary Western ones, often refer to SOHR data in their reports on Syria.

Historian Pierre Picolin also says the Observatory is a source Western media choose to rely exclusively on when it comes to getting information about Syria.

“I say that there are two such 'observatories,' and they are both connected with the opposition. In reality these organizations are the opposition’s propaganda agencies, propaganda tools.” he said.

“It is part of the journalist’s job to think critically, verify sources and be extremely cautious. But they decide to just spread the information they receive from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, without asking any questions.”

In fact there are two sites each claiming to be an official observatory and providing different data. Both sites report slightly different figures, none of which can be independently confirmed, leaving media outlets wondering how reliable their sources are.

Russian FM condemns Syria blasts, accuses certain powers for violence

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has condemned the recent twin bombings in Syria, accusing certain foreign powers of encouraging the ongoing violence, Press TV reports.

“Unfortunately governments who support the opposition groups are not allowing for an understanding to be reached. They even encourage the opposition groups to not accept an agreement, and instead they force for the continuation of destructive activities,” Lavrov said during a visit to China.

He also said that his country would not change its stance towards a resolution to the violence in Syria despite growing foreign pressure.

The foreign minister’s remarks come a day after the deadliest attacks since the country's last year's uprising. On Thursday, twin bomb blasts in the al-Qazzaz district in Damascus claimed the lives of at least 55 people, injuring another 400.

China also called on all sides to work towards the peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.

Russia and China argue that a resolution calling for a regime change will not reduce the unrest in Syria, but would only give Western countries a pretext to intervene.

Both powers are calling for political dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition groups.

Moscow and Beijing have vetoed two Western-backed UN Security Council resolutions calling on Assad to step down as a move towards a solution.

On May 9, a bomb attack also targeted a Syrian military truck escorting a convoy of UN observers near the southwestern city of Dara’a. Six Syrian soldiers were wounded in the attack.

A number of UN observers are currently monitoring the ceasefire in Syria which took effect on April 12.

The first group of the observers arrived in the Syrian capital on April 15 in line with the UNSC Resolution 2042, which had been approved a day earlier.

On April 21, the Security Council met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.

At least 91 people have been killed and scores injured in the twin shooting and bomb attacks in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, and a nearby island.

"We have confirmation that at least 84 people are dead. We do not exclude a higher toll," said Are Frykholm, a Norwegian police spokesman, in reference to Friday's killings at a youth camp on the island of Utoeya, AFP reported.

A man dressed as a police officer opened fire at the youth meeting of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's ruling Labor Party in Utoeya island, south of Oslo, and went on a shooting spree.

Seven others lost their lives in the powerful bomb blast in central Oslo, where the premier's office and several government buildings are located.

Security was meanwhile tightened across potential target sites in the Norwegian capital, police said on Saturday.

The Norwegian prime minister pointed out that the culprits would not intimidate one of Europe's most peaceful countries.

"People have lived through a nightmare that very few of us can imagine," he noted.

"The coming days will show who is responsible and what kind of punishment they will get,” he went on to say.

"The message to whoever attacked us, the message from all of Norway is that you will not destroy us, you will not destroy our democracy and our ideals for a better world," he added.

Earlier reports said that at least ten people died in the island while seven perished in the bombing in central Oslo.

According to reports, Stoltenberg's office and other buildings were heavily damaged in the blast, while sidewalks were covered in broken glass as smoke rose above the wreckage.

Police say the powerful explosion was caused by a bomb. Security officials have evacuated people from the area and the army has taken up positions in central Oslo, fearing another blast.

They believe the explosion and shooting are linked. A 32-year-old person has been arrested over Utoeya shooting and counter terrorism forces have been dispatched to the scene.

The attacks were the worst in western Europe since the 2004 train bombings in the Spanish capital of Madrid, which claimed the lives of 191 people and left nearly 2,000 others wounded.

A heavy explosion has rocked government headquarters in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, killing Seven people and leaving at least 15 others injured.

The blast has caused damage to the prime minister's office and a number of other government buildings. Reports say the blast blew out most of windows of the premier's office.

According to local reports, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was not in his office at the time of the explosion.

The headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG had also been damaged.

Public radio NRK reported that the explosion seemed to have taken place near the finance ministry, which is near the Norwegian prime minister's office and the VG editorial offices.

Officials said some people were still inside the damaged buildings and that the number of casualties is expected to rise.

Police say the powerful explosion was caused by a bomb. Security officials have evacuated people from the area and the army have taken up positions in central Oslo, fearing another blast.

Meanwhile, a man dressed as a police officer opened fire at a youth meeting of the ruling Labor Party in Utoeya island, south of Oslo, killing at least four people, state television NRK reported. Several people were also injured in the shooting.

Police believe the explosion and shooting are linked. One person has been arrested over Utoeya shooting and counter terrorism forces have been dispatched to the scene.

Prime Minister Stoltenberg was due to attend the meeting.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says three detained suspects have confessed to their involvement in a metro bombing in the capital Minsk that killed a dozen people on Monday.

"Today ... the crime was solved. The [state security service] KGB and police needed just one day ... to carry out a brilliant operation and detain the perpetrators," Reuters quoted Lukashenko as saying on Wednesday.

"We must look into statements made by political actors...Maybe these actors from the 'fifth column' will open their cards and point to the one who ordered (the attack)," he added.

The remarks came on a day that the ex-Soviet republic held mourning ceremonies for the victims of the April 11 metro blast in Minsk, which reportedly killed 12 people and wounded 150 others.

Chairman of the State Security Committee of Belarus Vadim Zaitsev said earlier that a man in his mid-20s was arrested and confessed to being involved in the bombing. He also stated that two other suspects have also confessed to their involvement in the subway attack.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian president said that the three suspects were also behind a bomb blast at a concert in Minsk in July 2008, which wounded about 50 people, and two other bombings in September 2005 that wounded more than 45 people in the city of Vitebsk.

"The detained criminals have confessed not only to carrying out the terrorist act in the Minsk metro. They are also responsible for the previous Independence Day and Vitebsk terrorist acts," Lukashenko noted.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned in the strongest terms the attack at the subway station, saying "any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable."

At least 11 people have been killed and more than 100 injured by an explosion in a subway station near Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's office in Minsk.

Smoke was seen rising from the Oktyabrskaya metro station in the city center on Monday and casualties were being taken out to the surface, AFP reported.

"Eleven people died as a result of the explosion," Interfax quoted Lukashenko as saying.

The Belarusian president blamed anonymous political opponents for the deadly incident in an emergency security session.

"I warned you that they won't let us live a calm life," said Lukashenko. "We have been presented with a serious challenge. We need an adequate response -- and it must be found."

While he said he could not rule out a foreign hand in the attacks, Lukashenko added, "I do not exclude that this is a present from abroad but we must look at home too."

The blast came amid severe economic conditions that have made the Belarusian government execute partial currency devaluation.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has pledged to launch an investigation into the terrorist attack at Moscow's busiest airport, which killed dozens of people.

Medvedev said a commission of inquiry will carry out an investigation in order to find out more information about the deadly blast at Domodedovo International Airport. He said obviously there have been lapses as appropriate legislation was passed after similar events, a Press TV correspondent in Moscow reported early on Tuesday.

The Russian leader was making reference to two bomb attacks in August 2004, when female Chechen bombers blew up two planes as they took off from Domodedovo Airport, killing a total of 90 people.

“From the preliminary information we have, it was a terror attack. Security should be tightened at all airports and other transport facilities in Russia,” Medvedev said at an emergency meeting on Monday.

The Russian president also postponed his departure to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after the bombing.

At least 35 people were killed and another 130 people were injured after a massive explosion ripped through the international arrivals hall of Domodedovo Airport on Monday afternoon, state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Reports say that 76 injured people remain in hospital and many of the wounded are in critical condition.

Spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin told Press TV late on Monday that police were working to establish the bomber's identity and how he managed to get inside the airport.

Initial reports suggest the explosion could have been caused by an explosive device containing up to seven kilograms of TNT.

At least 35 people have been killed in an explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport -- the busiest in the Russian capital.

The blast, which occurred at one of the airport's international arrivals halls, has also left 130 people injured.

People were evacuated from the airport after reports of large amounts of smoke near a baggage carousel.

"According to preliminary information, the explosive device was set off by a…bomber in the international departures hall," Interfax news agency quoted the unnamed security source as saying.

Moscow police have stepped up security across the city after the explosion.

At least 35 people have been killed in the blast, airport spokeswoman Yelena Galanova said on national television.

"All the patrols are looking for suspicious people and objects in public places," an unnamed law enforcement official told Interfax. "They are paying particular attention to transport."

Following the incident, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a special security measures to be taken across the country's transport hubs.

Medvedev has postponed his visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, planned for this week, as a result of the blast, Kremlin spokeswoman Natalya Timakova said.

Spokespeople for the city's two other passenger airports said security measures were heightened after the blast with all luggage being searched and staff examining footage from security cameras in the terminals.

The airport is 40 km (25 miles) south-east of the city center, and is popular with foreign workers and tourists flying into the city.

Double bombings carried out by two female bombers on the Moscow metro on March 29, 2010, killed 40 and wounded more than 100.

Blackwater/Xe mercs arrive in Somalia, Al-Shabab says

At least 18 people have been killed in clashes between rival factions in southern and central Somalia, and there are reports that Blackwater/Xe mercenaries have entered the country.

A battle broke out between the pro-government Ahlu Sunnah militia and Hizbul Islam fighters in the town of Baladwayne on Sunday and went well into Monday, during which at least 13 people lost their lives, witnesses said.

In addition, five people were killed when Hizbul Islam fighters engaged Al-Shabab fighters in the town of Dhobley near the Kenyan border, Reuters reported.

There are also allegations of US-sponsored bomb plots in the capital.

The bombings will be carried out in order to create a pretext to launch a campaign against Al-Shabab, a spokesman of the group, Sheikh Ali Mohammed Rage, told Reuters.

"We have discovered that US agencies are going to launch suicide bombings in public places in Mogadishu," he told reporters. "They have tried it in Algeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan… We warn of these disasters. They want to target Bakara Market and mosques, then use that to malign us."

At a meeting with tribal elders in Mogadishu on Monday, the Al-Shabab spokesman said that mercenaries of the Xe private security firm — formerly known as Blackwater — have arrived in the Somali capital, the Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported on Monday.

Blackwater/Xe mercenaries plan to carry out bombings in Mogadishu in order to accuse Al-Shabab of being the culprits in the attacks, the Al-Shabab spokesman added.

He went on to say that the Blackwater/Xe mercenaries have already recruited many lackeys to help them carry out bombings targeting prominent individuals and innocent civilians.

The Al-Shabab spokesman also told the tribal elders that a system based on Islam should be established in Somalia.
