Qatar has become the major supplier of weaponry and funds to
the terrorist Free Syrian Army fighting against the government of Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad.
Large amounts of money and weapons are being transferred from Lebanon to Syria by a network of Qatari intelligence and Lebanese agents, the Lebanese daily newspaper Ad-Diyar reported on Wednesday.
The network is reportedly supervised by British and French agents.
Last week, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani
acknowledged that Doha has “used all available means” to help the Syrian
opposition.
Doha has so far spent billions of dollars in its quest to topple President Assad. A portion of the fund is believed to have been paid to the Lebanese Western-backed March 14 coalition and its supporters.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
Western states have been calling for Assad to step down. However, Russia and China are strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.
