The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah says the recent Israeli attack on the Lebanese Army is tantamount to an offensive against the entire country.
On Monday, the Israeli military opened fire on a military base in the Wazzani border area in southern Lebanon, prompting the Lebanese soldiers to fire back.
At least one Lebanese national was reportedly wounded in the incident.
Afterwards the Lebanese military declared a state of alert.
“Any attack against any element of the army, people, and resistance equation is an assault against the whole of Lebanon,” Hezbollah said in a statement issued in response to the Israeli aggression, the Lebanese news portal Naharnet reported.
Hezbollah stated that the attack was carried out “in a provocative and surprising way.”
“This crime is a reminder for the Lebanese people of the aggressive nature of the Zionist enemy and its greed in the Lebanese territory,” the statement added.
In August 2010, three Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist, and a senior Israeli officer were killed during an exchange of fire that broke out after an Israeli patrol unit crossed the Lebanese border.
It was the deadliest incident initiated by Israel against Lebanon since the 2006 war, which killed around 1,200 Lebanese. Most of the victims were civilians.
