US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has asked Russia to support a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on Syria.
Clinton made the call during a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday, AFP reported.
"With regard to Syria, their discussion focused on action in the UN Security Council and how the US and Russia can work together to make sure that we can get to a UN Security Council resolution that supports peace and security in Syria," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
Russia opposes a Security Council resolution against Damascus and has called for a diplomatic solution to the unrest in Syria.
Nuland also said Washington is stepping up contacts with opposition groups both inside and outside Syria.
Moscow says the Syrians themselves should resolve their differences without any outside interference.
Since the beginning of the unrest in mid-March, hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed.
The shadowy opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings. But the government blames armed gangs for the violence, saying that the unrest is being orchestrated from outside the country.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has vowed to bring the people responsible for the killings to justice.
