South Africa has started negotiations with Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's camp to offer him a place of refuge as fighters have seized control of most of the capital Tripoli.

Gaddafi won't come to South Africa as he has not asked for refuge, South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane told reporters on Monday, Reuters reported.

Rejecting reports of sending aircraft for Gaddafi, Nkoana-Mashabane said South Africa will only send means of transport at a “situation of strife” to evacuate its embassy staff and South African nationals to Tunisia.

"The South Africa government would like to refute and dispel the rumors and claims that it has sent planes to Libya to fly Colonel Gaddafi and his family to an undisclosed location," she further explained.

This is while there are no reports of Gaddafi's whereabouts. Some sources say he is still in his Bab Al-Aziziya compound south of the capital Tripoli.

On Sunday, the embattled ruler broadcast three audio messages, calling on his supporters to take into the streets and fight for their country.

Residents of Tripoli, however, welcomed fighters with loud cheers and celebrated the revolutionaries' entrance to Tripoli and the capture of Gaddafi's sons.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between government troops and opposition forces since a revolution seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.
