China has called on the United Nations to lead international post-war efforts in Libya to quickly restore stability in the North African country.

In a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi urged him to play a leading role and work with other regional organizations to restore order in Libya, Xinhua reported.

He noted that the Libyan situation has entered a critical phase following months of deadly violence.

Yang said that the Chinese government is ready to work with the broader international community to re-establish calm and order in conflict-stricken Libya.

Ban, for his part, said effective efforts will be made to guarantee the safety of foreign diplomatic missions and other foreign nationals in Libya.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between regime troops and fighters since a revolution movement seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.

The fighters advanced into the heart of Tripoli early Monday, seizing control of much of the capital without facing significant resistance from regime forces. They are now facing only small pockets of resistance from Gaddafi's loyalists in other areas.

The whereabouts of the elusive 68-year-old Libyan dictator and his family remain unknown.
