Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has announced that he will not run for re-election following demonstration that called for a political change in the Arab nation.

"No to hereditary rule and no to life presidency," Saleh said on Wednesday during an emergency session of parliament and the consultative council.

Last Thursday Sana'a was the scene of an anti-government demonstration of thousands of people calling for the ouster of President Saleh.

They also called for an end to what they call unilateral action taken over the constitution.

The moves made by the ruling party earlier this year could make Saleh the president of Yemen for life.

Since then, tensions have been running high between the ruling party and the opposition.
