Pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain have vowed to stage more massive demonstrations against the rule of al-Khalifa in the days to come.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Manama's Pearl Square on Monday, vowing not to leave until their demands are met by the regime.
The protesters called a massive demonstration for Tuesday and expect tens of thousands of people to converge at the Square.
They appeared unimpressed by the heir to Bahrain's throne, Crown Prince Salman's call for dialogue, instead calling on him to leave.
The crown prince has been tasked by his father, King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa, with launching a wide-reaching dialogue with the opposition.
The opposition, however, has raised the stakes, demanding a "real constitutional monarchy" and the government's resignation.
Laborers and students along with lawmakers and teachers have joined the protests to demand a better quality of life in the kingdom.
Bahrainis, inspired by revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, have been expressing disappointment with the political reforms of the past decade, which have failed to bring prosperity and real change.
The protests, however, took a new turn on Thursday after the brutal crackdown on protesters left at least five people dead and more than 230 injured.
Reports say that the troops who open live fire on protesters are foreign nationals granted Bahraini citizenship by the government.
At least eight people have so far been killed and hundreds injured in the clashes since the uprising in the Arab world reached Bahrain last week.
