Pro-democracy protesters have seized several cities across Libya despite the government's bloody crackdown on people in the North African country.

Protesters overran Benghazi and Sirte on Monday after several army units escaped from the cities.

Local tribes took control of the headquarters of an oil company in Ubari city in southwestern Libya.

Police abandoned the border town of al-Zawiya amidst chaos and unrest.

The protesters attacked the headquarters of the state television in Tripoli overnight and set fire to the offices of the People's Committees there.

On Monday, security forces killed scores of people in Benghazi, the country's second largest city, in just seven hours.

The Libyan regime has resorted to indiscriminate machine gun fire in its brutal crackdown on crowds of protesters as the prospects of the downfall of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's four-decade rule grows stronger.
