Days after determined refusal to make an apology over the killing of Turkish nationals aboard a Gaza-bound aid ship, Israel moves to shift focus to the close ties between Turkey and Iran.
Relations between Turkey and Israel took a turn for a worst on May 31 when Israeli soldiers opened fire on the Turkish vessel M.V. Mavi Marmara as it attempted to transport humanitarian aid and medical supplies to the Gaza Strip.
At least nine people died in the attack, most of whom were of Turkish nationality.
In a Saturday address to a conference organized by the Israel Project, Tel Aviv's Ambassador to Washington Micheal Oren, criticized Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for maintaining warm relations with Iran and the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas.
"Turkey has embraced the leaders of Iran and Hamas, all of whom called for Israel's destruction," said the Israeli ambassador.
"Our policy has not changed but Turkey's policy has changed, very much, over the last few years," he added. "Under a different government with an Islamic orientation, Turkey has turned away from the West."
Erdogan has described the commando attack as "an Israeli massacre," which should be thoroughly investigated and dealt with accordingly.
