The nuclear-powered USS Enterprise has left Norfolk and is now heading for its combat duty in the Mediterranean and then in the Persian Gulf, the U.S. Navy reports.
The Enterprise is expected to spend the most part of its seven-month Middle Eastern deployment as part of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, stationed in Bahrain.
The fighter carrier will be deployed in the Persian Gulf together with other ships, forming a carrier strike group that would enter into action in case of a conflict with Iran.
Its deck-based aviation took part in the 1988 air missions against Iran, having delivered retaliatory strikes for the Iranian mining of the Persian Gulf.
The Persian Gulf will be the final deployment for the USS Enterprise after 50 years of service. The ship is carrying 60 planes and choppers, including 48 F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets. Voice of Russia
