US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has warned of unusually uncertain prospects for the US economy while commenting on unemployment and inflation.

The Federal Reserve stands ready to ease monetary policy further if the US economic recovery withers, Bernanke told the US Senate in testimony on Wednesday.

Bernake said private sector jobs have not grown fast enough to reduce the unemployment rate, which is running at 9.5 percent.

He went on to say that the unemployment rate will remain well above seven percent by the end of 2012, when President Barack Obama's current term ends.

US stocks declined after Bernanke's remarks.
