US President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit a new low, as nearly 60 percent of Americans say they have lost faith in him, an opinion poll shows.
The poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News indicates 58 percent of the respondents have "just some" or "no" confidence in Obama to make the right decision for the country's future.
The results are a mirror reversal of what voters thought of Obama at the start of his presidency, 18 months ago. Back then, 60 percent of Americans approved of the new president's decision makings.
Now, only 43 percent support his handling of the economy.
The ailing economy, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the war in Afghanistan are all thought to have taken a toll on Obama's approval rating.
Meanwhile, the poll found that 68 percent of Americans do not approve of the Democrats in Congress and 72 percent expressed the same sentiments about the Republicans.
The survey also reflected a wide anti-incumbent mood, with 62 percent of voters saying they would not support their current representative in the upcoming congressional elections.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives as well as 36 in the Senate are up for grabs in the November 2 elections.
Democrats now control both houses of Congress.
A slight majority of those polled said they would prefer to have Republicans in control of Congress to check on Obama's policies.
