Power boss urges Ukrainians to leave the country

Moving abroad for “another three or four months” would help the energy system amid Russian attacks, DTEK CEO Maksim Timchenko says

Ukrainians should consider leaving the country to reduce the burden on the damaged power grid, Maksim Timchenko, the head of largest private power utility, DTEK Holding, has said. He made the remarks in an interview with the BBC aired Saturday.

“If they can find an alternative place to stay for another three or four months, it will be very helpful to the system,” Timchenko stated.

He also urged his compatriots to consume less electricity, explaining that a surplus is needed for critical infrastructure facilities and hospitals. Over the past few weeks, Ukraine’s energy system has been repeatedly targeted by the Russian military, prompting rolling and emergency blackouts.

“If you consume less, then hospitals with injured soldiers will have guaranteed power supply. This is how it can be explained that by consuming less or leaving, they also contribute to other people,” Timchenko said.

The remarks were apparently deemed to be too alarming for the general population. The Energy Ministry stepped in to assure people that the situation with the power supply is still under control and that there is no need to flee the country.

“Denying the panicky statements spread by social networks and online media, we assure you that the situation with the energy supply is difficult, but under control,” the Energy Ministry said in a statement.

DTEK also downplayed the remarks by the CEO. The company denied that Timchenko had called for people to leave the country, publishing a carefully cropped excerpt from his interview with the BBC to support their claim.

“It’s not [an] emergency to leave immediately, but we need to organize ourselves, we’re all fighters on the energy front,” Timchenko was quoted as saying in the excerpt published by DTEK.

The Russian military began targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in early October, after a deadly truck bombing damaged the Crimean Bridge. Moscow blamed the incident on Kiev, and stated that it was only the latest attempt by Ukraine to damage civilian infrastructure in Russia.

Energy disaster awaits EU after this winter – oil CEOs

Remaining Russian stocks will only allow the bloc to survive one heating season

The EU is “in good shape” in terms of energy reserves this winter, however, a real risk of a shortfall lies ahead in 2023, major oil and gas executives have warned.

The region is facing an unprecedented energy crunch following a drop in imports from Russia. The oil and gas shortages, and record-high inflation, have resulted in an overall cost-of-living crisis across the bloc.

But while concerns are focused on the turmoil of the coming winter, it is the next cold season that they should really worry about, CEO of major oil trader Vitol, Russell Hardy, has said.

“We’ve got a difficult winter ahead, and subsequent to that we’ve got a more difficult winter in the year ahead of that because the production that is available to Europe in the first half of 2023 is considerably less than the production we had available to us in the first half of 2022,” he said at a conference in Abu Dhabi last week.

Energy prices have gone off the charts and are close to “unaffordability” with many households “spending 50% of their disposable income on energy or higher,” BP CEO Bernard Looney has warned, agreeing with his colleague that the next winter “in Europe could be even more challenging.”

Even though the EU has managed to fill its energy stockpiles by 90%, according to IEA data, the reserves are made up mostly of Russian gas. But as the bloc is speeding up the transition away from Russian pipeline deliveries, there will be no supplies from the bloc’s former biggest supplier.

“The issue is not this winter. It will be the next one because we are not going to have Russian gas – 98% [less] next year, maybe nothing,” Eni chief Claudio Descalzi pointed out.

Given the demand from China, a major importer of gas, and skyrocketing LNG prices, executives of energy companies are worried about possible social unrest, pointing at some EU countries, like the Czech Republic where households saw their energy bills increase tenfold.

The following Poem which is related is By "The Activist Poet" written in August 2022

Dancing in Minefields

Darker days are coming
I can feel it in the air
anxious moments in the calm
that leaves me in despair.

Europe is at a crossroads
as their sanctions start to grow
the pain is their own making
as history will come to show.

Their actions stopped the wheel
we wait to find out what’s next
economy’s now gone missing
while people look on perplexed.

Energy isn’t moving
NATO falls into a dream
boasting some sort of power
granted by empires meme.

Behind the squawk is the sandman
lurking in shadows below
warning of Russian invasion
while puppets put on a show.

Winter is fast approaching
energy needed for heat
cut off by U.S. direction
sanctions do not bring relief.

The population is restless
lunatics run the estate
legislating their reset
elites are tempting their fate.

Cartel is flexing its mussel
choking with sanctions they do
all attempts then backfire
including calls for a coup.

Conflicts rise with direction
infighting in the E.U.
escalation to conflict
dancing in minefields ensue.

The E.U.’s going to shatter
decisions will come to each state
die with energy sanctions
or push a freedom mandate.

About this Poem: The European Union is going to implode

Oil in decline – U.A.E. energy minister

Crude will not be around forever despite high global demand, the UAE’s energy minister warned

Oil will not be here forever and is already in “decline mode,” Suhail Al-Mazrouei, the energy minister of the United Arab Emirates, a major crude exporter, has said.

Speaking at the ADIPEC energy conference in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, Al-Mazrouei warned against “wishful thinking” of assuming that oil “is going to be there forever.”

“No matter how much we defend it, it’s in decline mode,” the official added.

The remark comes as OPEC released its ‘World Oil Outlook’ earlier this week, which forecasts global oil demand continuing to rise until 2045 due to a focus on energy security even as the world moves toward renewable energy.

The report noted that oil is expected to retain the largest share in the global energy mix, accounting for 29% over the forecast period, and that the industry will require $12.1 trillion in investment by 2045 to meet demand.

Putin calls for closer ties with Arab states

The Middle East and North Africa play an increasingly important role in a “multipolar” world, the Russian leader said

Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged for stronger relations with the Arab League and its member states, proposing closer cooperation in maintaining regional security and in resolving a number of ongoing conflicts from Libya to Yemen.

Addressing the members of the Arab League ahead of the body’s 31st summit in Algiers on Tuesday, Putin said the “formation of a multipolar system of international relations is gaining momentum,” adding that the nations of the Middle East and North Africa, “with a combined population of almost half a billion,” will play an “increasingly significant role in this process.”

“Russia is ready to continue to fully boost ties with the Arab League and all its members, particularly in strengthening regional and global security,” the president continued. “We believe that the military and political issues that the Middle East and North Africa are facing – including the Syrian and Libyan crises and the Yemeni and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts – should be resolved based on universally recognized international laws, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.”

The Arab League summit kicked off later on Tuesday, with officials from all of the body’s 22 members in attendance besides Syria, which has been suspended from the organization since its civil war began in 2011. Though there was some discussion about allowing Damascus to attend the event in Algiers, Syria’s own foreign minister reportedly suggested the issue be resolved later “for the sake of Arab unity given the challenges posed by current regional and international conditions,” according to Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra.

The regional organization was forced to delay the summit several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including in 2020, 2021 and once again earlier this year.

The two-day event is the first Arab League summit since some members signed normalization deals with Israel, moves which have stoked condemnation from other members – namely the Palestinians, who have slammed any improved diplomatic ties as a betrayal of their cause. Algeria, the host of this year’s summit, remains a vocal supporter of the Palestinians.

Among other issues, the league is expected to discuss the Israel-Palestine conflict, ongoing crises in Libya, Yemen and Syria, regional food and energy security, reforms to the league itself, as well as the conflict in Ukraine and its aftermath.
