Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has declared that Moscow will not support the imposition of “unduly harsh” sanctions on Iran.
Speaking at a think tank in Washington on Tuesday, Medvedev said potential UN Security Council sanctions against Iran “certainly must not punish the people,” Reuters reported.
On Monday, Medvedev had said that "the sanctions are a tricky thing which works seldom.”
He warned that imposing energy sanctions on Iran could lead to a "humanitarian catastrophe."
Medvedev asserted that any possible sanctions on Iran "should not lead to humanitarian catastrophe, where the whole Iranian community would start to hate the whole world."
Russia and China have repeatedly called for a diplomatic solution to the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
